The aim of this session is to discuss the challenges for real-life deployment of CCAM technologies, based on lessons learnt from large-scale demonstrations carried out in EU funded research projects, like HI-DRIVE, ULTIMO and SHOW. These challenges can be grouped into several key areas: 1. Safety and reliability: Ensuring the safety of automated vehicles in various scenarios, including unexpected events, edge cases, and system failures. 2. Cybersecurity: Protecting against hacking and cyber threats, which could compromise the safety and security of the vehicle and its occupants. 3. Regulatory frameworks: Establishing harmonised regulations and standards for the consistent deployment of automated vehicles across different regions and countries. 4. Public acceptance: Addressing public concerns and building trust in automated vehicles. This involves understanding the social and psychological factors influencing public acceptance and developing strategies to address these concerns. 5. Technical interoperability: Ensuring seamless communication and data exchange between different system components, vehicles and infrastructure. 6. Infrastructure integration: Integrating automated vehicles with existing infrastructure, such as traffic management systems, communication systems and physical/digital road networks. Scaling up demonstrations of automated vehicles can help address these challenges by providing a more comprehensive and realistic test environment. Testing a larger number of vehicles can help to identify and fix safety, reliability and cybersecurity issues. It can also test the effectiveness of interoperability and infrastructure integration in a real-world environment. Finally, increased testing volume can generate large amounts of data on the performance of automated vehicles, which can be used to inform regulatory frameworks and standards.
