In 2020, 18,800 people in the European Union (EU) died in road crashes, while in 2021 it was 19,900, in 2022 around 22,600 and in 2023 again 20400, which brings the figure more or less back to where it was in 2019. Especially vulnerable road users (VRUs) such as pedestrians and two-wheeler vehicle causing a significant increase. There is still a lot that must be done if we are to achieve our ambitious targets of halving the number of traffic fatalities in the EU by 2030 and eliminating them altogether by 2050, if possible. It is very important to use all available opportunities to further improve road safety. Direct or network-based vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, including data fusion from different sources like vehicles, road infrastructure and cloud-based services, are regarded as essential technologies to support this goal. As an interactive communication system, V2X compliments traditional countermeasures for VRU safety and supports driving and traffic management decisions. The purpose of this session is to provide on one hand an update of recent developments regarding the C-ITS in terms of their potential significant reduction of crashes and fatalities. The developments should focus more on vulnerable road users (VRU) such as cyclists and pedestrians. We are also looking into measures and programs from other regions to motivate more necessary European activities. This subject is more important than ever these days.
