SIS 41 Resilient and ubiquitous connectivity solutions from space
Date & Time
Tuesday, May 20, 2025, 3:15 PM - 4:15 PM
Description

Space integration with terrestrial networks is pivotal to extend the reach and reliability of terrestrial networks and support global connectivity, enabling everything from remote operations to seamless data exchange. Hybrid satellite-terrestrial networks are crucial for achieving a truly global connectivity infrastructure, offering several key benefits such as: ubiquitous coverage, reaching areas where terrestrial network cell towers are scarce or non-existent; seamless connectivity, ensuring smooth transitions between terrestrial and satellite networks without service interruptions; network resilience, providing reliable connectivity for critical applications and in situations where terrestrial networks are compromised. ESA and the European industry are collaborating to demonstrate the added value that satellites bring to terrestrial networks, i.e. 5G and 6G. Integrating satellite and terrestrial systems is imperative to achieving 100% connectivity, which is vital for safety, security, and enabling new business opportunities in the mobility sector. For instance, hybrid connectivity solutions can contribute to sustainability by reducing CO2 and GHG emissions and supporting the electrification of the automotive industry. On the telematics side, the combination of satellite communications, position, navigation, and timing (PNT), and Earth observation can expand the range of telematics applications, enhancing digitalization and connectivity for telematics services. The core of the session is to present how these challenges are addressed in different initiatives that have started in ESA developing sustainable solutions that combine the capabilities of terrestrial systems with those that can be provided from space. The session will be a forum for end-to-end solutions, case studies and challenges that could lead to innovative user-driven solutions.
