Illegal parking in bus stop zones is a widespread problem that creates serious dangers for passengers boarding and exiting a bus, but especially for people with disabilities and senior citizens. For a disabled person, a blocked bus stop can mean the difference between reaching their destination on time or late – or not reaching it at all. Illegal parking at bus stops makes boarding dangerous and sometimes impossible for wheelchair users because bus operators are unable to properly deploy wheelchair access ramps to the curb if the bus cannot pull up to the curb. Reducing the number of parking violations that obstruct bus stop access has historically been extremely difficult for parking enforcement agencies. However, in August 2024 Município de Braga and Transportes Urbanos de Braga (TUB) partnered with Hayden AI to pilot new AI-powered technology mounted on buses that makes it possible for transit agencies to automatically detect illegal parking in bus stop zones and forward that information to parking enforcement agencies to issue tickets. Learn about the results of the three-month pilot (funded by EIT Urban Mobility’s Transatlantic AI Award), how Braga plans to use automated bus stop enforcement technology beyond the pilot, and how this technology is being used in major cities around the world to improve safety and bus on-time performance.
