The rapid, global advancements in CCAM in the recent years are undeniable, with several eye-catching demonstrations, pilots and implementations. In the latter, especially US and Asia are much advancing. The European automotive sector, fundamental for the economic development and the competitiveness of Europe due to its role as employer, innovator and connector, is under pressure. The CCAM Partnership, under the EU research programme, can support Europe in keeping the pace and maintaining competitive excellence by leading in quality, innovation, and reliability. This can position Europe as a global standard-setter, with CCAM solutions that meet the highest standards for safety, interoperability, and user-centered design. The session will discuss the time left, and actions needed, to preserve European technological sovereignty. It will further discuss the need for independencies in road transport as a system of utmost strategic relevance from the perspective of European sovereignty and security. CCAM’s potential to drive the renewal of the European automotive industry, together with the key enabling role of CCAM for European economic growth and competitiveness will be discussed. A European pathway to accelerate the deployment and scaling of CCAM technologies is included.
