Description

Integrating connected, cooperative, and automated mobility (CCAM) into existing infrastructure is essential for creating safer and more efficient transport systems. This session focuses on tested solutions for enhancing traffic efficiency and safety for vulnerable road users (VRUs) during emergencies. Drawing on pilot site tests from European projects, it demonstrates the integration of physical and digital infrastructure within existing mobility networks in urban areas. Examples include showcasing how advanced technologies enable the creation of adaptable and secure operational design domains (ODDs), ensuring safe operating conditions for automated vehicles across diverse and complex road environments. Another example highlights the development of advanced traffic control systems that leverage real-time connected vehicle data, such as speeds and delays, to prioritise emergency vehicles and protect VRUs in urban corridors. Advanced methods for managing connected emergency vehicles will be discussed, showcasing how connected vehicle data enhances Traffic Management Systems for efficient routing and prioritisation during emergencies, reducing response times and network disruptions. Integrated traffic management systems will be explored, demonstrating how CCAM can balance demand and supply across the transport network, optimising performance and supporting recovery after disruptions like accidents or planned events. The session will also showcase an automated shuttle fleet operation for demand-responsive transport services, enhancing mobility for vulnerable groups. Remote monitoring and real-time communication between vehicles and infrastructure ensure this service's safe and efficient operation. By focusing on integrating digital tools with existing physical infrastructure, this session highlights practical solutions that can boost traffic efficiency and safety.
