Gender disparities in mobility and the ITS workforce persist, affecting both how women travel and their representation in shaping transport solutions. According to CIVITAS, women rely more on public transport, often making multi-stop trips for caregiving and household tasks, underscoring the need for inclusive and accessible systems. Meanwhile, the World Economic Forum’s Gender Gap Report 2023 highlights a global employment gap of 15%, with fewer women working in ITS-related roles compared to men. This session will explore two critical dimensions of gender in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS): Part 1: Women as Users of Mobility How can ITS solutions better meet the needs of women? Insights from global projects will highlight how inclusivity, safety, and accessibility can be embedded in transport systems. Living Labs in cities like Hanoi, Kigali, and Madrid (SOL+ project) showcase how e-mobility can drive gender-transformative solutions. Additionally, the InclusiveSpaces project will demonstrate how a gender-transformative approach to public spaces and mobility—through data-driven strategies, prevention measures, and care-based solutions—can foster safety and respect for all women and gender-diverse users. Part 2: Women Working in Mobility Beyond mobility solutions, the ITS workforce itself must evolve to be more inclusive. Representatives from TOMTOM, POLIS, ITS Vienna Region and cambiaMO will explore gender dynamics in the sector, discussing challenges, opportunities, and trends. Key topics include the impact of digitalization and automation, gender-inclusive workplace policies, and how integrating gender perspectives into technology development can lead to more equitable ITS solutions. By addressing both the user and workforce perspectives, this session aims to spark actionable discussions on advancing gender equality in mobility and ITS.
