Name
SIS 39 Intelligent traffic management: the “A” in AI
Date & Time
Tuesday, May 20, 2025, 3:15 PM - 4:15 PM
Description

This Session endeavours to continue the dialogue that started in Lisbon among traffic management stakeholders on the use of AI and the risk it poses on safety and fundamental human rights. Public and private stakeholders have used AI and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms for decades now in their effort to improve traffic flows and alleviate traffic congestion. AI -aided data analytics and traffic modelling support services and products that aim to reduce traffic congestion and travel times. AI can support the optimisation of traffic as well as multimodal mobility solutions. Yet, the EU AI Act that entered into force on 1 August 2024, the first ever legal framework on AI globally, has deemed the application of AI in Traffic management as a High Risk, making it very difficult for organisations that develop and deploy AI supported products and services in traffic management to promote their products’ use and procurement by the public sector. Why is the AI Act taking the traffic management sector hostage in its legislative move to protect human safety and fundamental rights? The Session will feature speakers from the public and private stakeholders active in traffic management who will discuss how intelligent traffic solutions use AI to support various degrees of decision-making support and when and if AI deployment in this field should be deemed High Risk.
